“I have worked in Set Decoration and Styling for over 30 years. This has been, and continues to be, a fascinating and immensely rewarding experience which has given me the opportunity to meet many interesting people and build an extensive network of suppliers.

I enjoy each new challenge, from the early stage of researching a Director’s influences and previous work, to working alongside new or familiar teams. I’m excited to explore new ideas and grow my network of fabricators but most of all, I believe my strength is problem solving the continually changing demands which the industry presents us with. Adaptability is key.

Exploring textures, forms, patterns, colours, lighting and layers of detail, are the key parts of our toolset in explaining the narrative and context. I place particular importance on being aware of the needs of performers in a space while allowing for the action and dialogue within the timespan of a shot.

Starting with a script, or a simple idea, will tell us about the spaces that need to be created. With further research, whether it’s historical, cultural or subject led, collaborating with all departments provides a cohesive understanding and appreciation in achieving the look and sense of the environments we are creating.

Good preparation and control over logistics are vital, as is dedication, attention to detail and an understanding of process, budgets and continuity. I believe the success of the Set Decoration and Art Department is in good communication, a consideration for the roles of every member of the crew - and not forgetting kindness, and a healthy sense of humour.”
